Biography: Jeffrey K. Liker researches and consults in lean manufacturing, supply chain management, and Japanese design and manufacturing systems. He is the author or co-author of over 60 articles and book chapters and four books. Liker co-edited
Engineered in Japan: Japanese Technology-Management Practices (Oxford, 1995), which earned him one of the four Singo Prizes for Excellence in Manufacturing that he has won. He is Director of the Value Chain Analysis Program and the Japan Management Program at the University of Michigan.
W. Mark Fruin studies Japanese manufacturing. He worked in a number of jobs at a Toshiba plant, an experience that resulted in his book,
Knowledge Works: Managing Intellectual Capital at Toshiba (Oxford, 1997). He is also editor of
Networks, Markets and the Pacific Rim: Studies in Strategy (Oxford, 1998) and author of
The Japanese Enterprise System: Competitive Strategies and Cooperative Structures (Oxford, 1992). He is a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Business Administration at Keio University and Visiting Professor of Corporate Strategy and Technology Management in the College of Business Administration at San Jose State University.
Paul S. Adler conducts research in strategic management, organization of R&D engineering, and manufacturing operations. His recent work has focused on the joint Toyota-GM plant in Fremont, California. He has edited
Technology and the Future of Work (Oxford, 1992), and co-edited
Usability: Turning Technologies into Tools (Oxford, 1992). He is a professor in the Department of Management at the Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California.
