Understanding Cost Variety

"In mass production companies, Manufacturing really wants to build a single product in high volume (for economies of scale), but Marketing would like to please customers with many variations."

Rationalizing Existing Products

"Almost all product lines could use some rationalization."

On the Road to Mass Customization: Standardization

"The challenge for mass customizers is to reduce the internal variety to the point where products can be built flexibly without the cost and time delays of setup changes."

Reducing Internal Complexity

"Many companies, even some highly respected ones, have allowed their internal variety to become excessive."

Using Commonality to Reduce Manufacturing Complexity

"What is the minimum list of part types we need to design new products?"

Encouraging Standardization

"It is imperative that mass customizers, or potential mass customizers, encourage standardization implementation as early as possible."

What Makes a Low-Cost Product

"With proper design and flexible operations, mass customized parts can be made at low cost virtually independent of volume."

Revenue Gains Realized through Mass Customization

"Price premiums will be possible for customized products, since they meet customers' needs better, and should be worth more to customers."

Creating an Agile Factory

"To achieve agility, which is a prerequisite for Mass Customization, all forms of setup must be driven to zero."

Fulfilling Orders in a Mass Customization Environment

"Most mass customized products will have too many possible configurations and too many rules to keep track of on paper."

Building Multifunctional Design Teams

"Tteam members should actively participate in the product development, not waiting for "designers" to design something and then reacting to their designs."

The Importance of Defining Products

"Product development is often launched because of intoxicating concepts that may or may not satisfy customers."
